Lost America

  • Lost America explores overlooked spaces in the American landscape and the strange familiarity they acquire when human presence is removed. The series isolates empty pools, drive-ins, houses, roadside structures, abandoned vehicles and churches.

    People are absent, but their traces remain: a basketball hoop without players, a payphone without a caller, a swing suspended over water. The spaces seem caught between use and abandonment, past and present.

    Familiar motifs carry echoes of cinema, television and the mythology of the American road, but are presented without spectacle. Framed as individual vignettes, ordinary places become quietly monumental, melancholic and uncanny.

    Using full depth of field, precise composition and the exclusion of contemporary distractions, the photographs resist a fixed moment in time. Lost America considers what remains when activity disappears, and how architecture, objects and landscape can continue to hold traces of memory.
